The difference between a ghost and a spirit

It’s really easy to attach ghosts and spirits to the same cloth – after all, ghost-hunters, spirit-chasers, you say potato, and I say … well, I’m sure you get my meaning. But are they the same? Well, it rather depends on your definition of each. If you are of the education that everything you read in the newspapers or watch on the television is absolutely true, then naturally you will presume that ghosts and spirits are just troublesome cousins who like to scare the life out of suburban housewives, as well as torment poor scientists still striving to prove their existence.

However, readers of the Supernatural Magazine know otherwise – don’t we? Well, let’s begin by defining each subject before we search for any significant difference.

Ghosts are visual, in the sense that we can see them with our physical eyes, and you don’t need to be psychic or intuitive for this to occur. The problem is that ghosts are extremely rare, hence why there is so little proof of their existence. As an intuitive psychic and spirit medium, I can only ever recount about five or six occasions when I have witnessed a ghost with my physical sight. Whereas, I am sitting at my computer typing this article with at least five or six spirit people in attendance – right now! So, why are there so many spirit people around, yet so few ghosts? The answer is actually fairly simple – but first we have to understand why a ghost should only occasionally appear right in front of our eyes.

When we see a ghost it will usually seem human like – and that’s because it is human in form. Imagine if you will, something terrible happens to you in this life, and when you return to the spirit world to reassess this particular incident, you are left with a dilemma of whether to accept what happened or constantly keep going over it in your thoughts, until the pain of what happened disappears. In most cases, the incident is eventually accepted and the spirit person can move on. However, very occasionally, a spirit will refuse to accept that what happened was beneficial to their ascension, and will be left with no alternative but to constantly review the case. When this happens a continual loop is created where the spirit person will forever view the previous incident in a nonlinear time domain (okay – it’s actually not that simple!). Think of coming home to watch the football match that you recorded on sky+. You then decide that you want to fast forward till the end of the match as you just can’t wait to find out how your team got on. You then find that they lost 1-0 and you choose to rewind to the point where the other team score. Horrified by your team’s terrible defending, you keep repeating the same clip over and over until you decide who is to blame for the goal – but you can’t make your mind up and the loop could feasibly continue for ever more, in a place where time becomes totally irrelevant.

When energy like this is overextended then occasionally it can leave a very slight trace in the physical plane, rather like a footprint left behind. And if someone from this world is in the right place at the right time, then very occasionally we get the opportunity to glimpse this footage – it’s as if we have temporarily infiltrated this continuous loop – and been rewarded with a prize! But here’s the thing – this is not conscious (electro-magnetic) energy that we are viewing, it is in fact kinetic energy created by the motion of the loop. Invariably, this is just a portion of the recorded football match, and as such this energy is not aware of the surroundings or whoever else is in the vicinity.

Spirits, on the other hand, are total consciousness. Spirit people are not recordings, nor are they small traces of film left behind for us to view. Spirits have no physical attributes whatsoever and as such cannot be viewed by physical sight. If you see a spirit person it is because they have linked into your thought pattern and projected an image into your mind. This procedure is often referred to as intuition or sixth sense but its actual true definition is telepathy.

A few years ago, I visited Culzean Castle in Scotland with my wife, Anne. In one of the castle rooms we both noticed half a leg, from the knee down, walking across the room and then disappearing through a wall. Later, we visited the infamous haunted bedroom. There, we did not witness any ghosts, but I was immediately aware of my gatekeeper guide who constantly remained by my side, protecting me from a particularly nasty spirit energy that was present in the room. The main difference that I found between the ghostly leg that we had viewed earlier and the nasty spirit from the haunted bedroom was that I was not afraid of the ghost. It didn’t seem to exist in reality even though we both saw it with our own eyes. However, the nasty spirit made anyone who entered that room feel extremely uncomfortable, even though you couldn’t actually see anything untoward.

We may often seem afraid of ghosts simply because we don’t understand them. But, the reality is that ghostly sightings are only tiny video recordings of events that have taken place in the physical past and been left behind indefinitely. Spirits, on the other hand, are far more complex beings. After all, we are but spirit people in human bodies – and who has yet to completely understand the complexities of the human mind?
