UFO’S and the Media - A review of Malcolm Robinson’s appearance on the This Morning Show July 2015

Needless to say, UFOs and the Paranormal are a big draw to the media and many researchers the world over have been invited to present their findings and I too have presented by findings on a number of shows. Anyway, I thought that it might be of interest to the readers of this magazine to see how things pan out when researchers like myself get invited onto these various shows.

But first a little bit about myself. I have been researching all things weird and the wonderful now for over 35 years. I’ve spent many nights in haunted houses where I’ve been kicked by spirit, had my hair pulled by spirit, incidents which turned me from being an ardent sceptic into a believer. I have written three books, UFO Case Files of Scotland (Volume 1) UFO case Files of Scotland (Volume 2) and Paranormal Case Files of Great Britain (Volume 1) and I have a further two books being released soon, one of which ‘The Monsters of Loch Ness’ will be out in a few months time. I am the first Scotsman to lecture on UFOs in the following countries, The United States of America (Laughlin Nevada) France (Strasbourg) The Netherlands (Utrecht) Ireland twice (Carrick on Shannon & Galway) and I am one of the few people on the planet to have gone down to a depth of over 500 feet in a submarine in Loch Ness back in 1994, but that as they say, is another story. Needless to say, working in the field of the paranormal, always attracts the media and over the years I have worked with the following TV stations, German Television, Dutch Television, Italian Television, American Television, Scottish Television, The BBC and ITV and many others. I accept that the media will always be interested in what I do and have come to realise that it ‘comes with the job’. My only concern is how the media ‘folk’ portray people like me, as this is a deadly serious subject and we don’t want it conveyed to the watching television audience in a belittling and jocular manner.

Anyway, for the purpose of this article it concerns my invite by ITV’s This Morning programme to do a piece with them for World UFO Day (June 2nd) and a chance to meet up with the lovely Amanda Holden and the ever smiling Philip Schofield at the ITV Studios on London’s South Bank. Now whilst I have done live television many times, it always gives me a buzz and if truth be told, just a little bit of nerves as one has to get it right for to fluff your lines on live television could end ones career. Thankfully this was not to be the case. After I had the obligatory make-up applied I was taken to the green room where I met another invited guest for the show, Shaun Ryder. Shaun for those who have never heard of him was the front man for the Happy Monday’s pop group. A singer songwriter and TV personality who was runner up in the tenth series of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Shaun is heavily into UFOs, as indeed are many other musicians the world over, but that again, is another story.

So after a thoroughly good chat about his UFO sightings and him informing me about his new series coming out on television later this year, we were ushered through to the main floor where they film ITV’s This Morning show. A nice young lady came over to mike me up and I was shown to the famous couch where I made myself comfortable. Shaun was then sat down next to me and looking around the studio floor I saw over two dozen people each with a job to do. Some were carrying clip boards whilst others were dotted about looking directly at us. There were at least 4 main big cameras on the studio floor at different angles from us, some were auto cue cameras which Shaun and I didn’t need, we were talking straight off the cuff no cheating or reading here, what we say is what you get! Soon our two hosts Amanda Holden (judge on the X Factor) and Philip Schofield (the Cube) bounced towards us with big smiles and hands outstretched and fixed us both with warm smiles and firm handshakes. After a few quick words it was down to business and with a studio countdown coming off the commercials, we were on. Live TV, don’t mess it up Malc! Thankfully I didn’t think about the few million watching at home, all I saw was a couple of dozen people on a studio floor looking at me, I’ve spoken to larger crowds at International UFO Conferences so basing my thoughts and direction on that I really felt at ease. Of course sitting inches away from me were two very famous people which did take a bit of getting used to but at the end of the day, they are just people. Philip started off by asking about some recent NASA footage which they showed to their viewers and what might be a UFO. I was asked for my thoughts and responded that this could be anything not necessarily a UFO. Now that I had my first words out, I didn’t want to stop I had so much more to say and knew that if Shaun wanted to get a word in he would need to be quick. Any slight nerves that I may have had at the start were fast melting away and I was off and in my stride. I had so many quotes and UFO incidents in my head that I wanted to get out that it was a case of, ‘which one should I use first’? There were people on the studio floor taking repetitive photographs of Shaun and I as we sat on the couch which was a bit strange but nonetheless I guess its part of what they do. Shaun eventually got a word in and he mentioned about his UFO sighting in the Peruvian jungle which he initially thought was his own television production team taking the mickey but later learned that this wasn’t the case. I then went on to speak about the cover up on UFOs here in the United Kingdom and in America based on the release of initially pre-classified Government documents but also stressed to the viewers that the vast amount of UFO sightings, as high as 95%, do have natural explanations. Prior to going live, I was told by a chap from the show that he wanted me to speak about a number of Scottish UFO sightings, so I knew they would be coming up. Sadly they only got round to one of those Scottish incidents as time was against us. Then all to soon (about 10 minutes) it was over, they cut to the commercials and that was it. Now I was a wee bit cheeky at this point, as I said to Amanda Holden, “Right Amanda and Phil, let’s have you, let’s get a group photo” to which thankfully they were more than happy to do so and we all grouped together for a shot of the four of us. One of the studio guys used my camera but there were at least another 4 photographers from the floor all taking photographs as well for their web site. And with that it was back to the green room, however before I left the studio, I was asked if I would like to go back and do another live piece in about 45 minutes, this would be a live on air phone in. I didn’t need to be asked twice, this would give me another chance to present to the public the reality of this subject. And so once more, with a wee bit of extra blusher applied I was again ushered back to the couch where I was joined by Amanda Holden and Philip Schofield. There were a few technical hic ups at the start of this segment where they lost the caller’s voice but after that we took a few calls from the general public and I was asked to give my thoughts as to what they saw. All too soon though this segment finished and that was that. As I made my way back to the Green Room I passed in the corridor Rylan who is best known for finishing in fifth place on the ninth series of the X Factor in 2012 and who won the Celebrity Big Brother back in 2013. It was his teeth that I noticed first! Did I stop to talk to him? No, I continued on my way and jumped into an ITV taxi which took me back to Charring Cross Station then onwards to sunny Hastings. It had been some day and although I could have said a lot more, with just ten minutes to say it in with four people talking I did well to get in what I did. I just hope that at the very least I have made some people in this country sit up and recognise that all is not what it seems, that there are many wonders out there in the vastness of the universe which we need to uncover. Here’s hoping anyway. My next television appearance is next month I believe on Channel 5, another show to do with UFOs. More details on that one when I have them.

I’ve been interested in the strange world of UFOs and the paranormal for as long as I can remember and in 1979 I formed my own research society entitled, Strange Phenomena Investigations, (SPI). Since forming this society, I have moved down to Hastings in East Sussex where I have started up a sister branch to SPI, entitled, Strange Phenomena Investigations England). SPI Scotland is now in the hands of a fellow researcher.
