Categorizing Unexplained Phenomena in Paranormal & Spiritual Research.

The world of the unexplained is quite vast. There are many things we as humans either haven’t grasped yet, or aren’t told about when it comes to amazing discoveries or ancient secrets. But as the awakening of knowledge & acceptance of things spiritual or supernatural continues to grow, more & more people are starting to research & study things which were taboo in days past. The things we were once told not to talk about in public are now finally being addressed & accepted. New paranormal research groups of various kinds are popping up in record numbers.

And this is a trend that’s likely to continue. As these groups gain experience & knowledge, many will come to the realization that these different kinds of unexplained phenomena are intertwined in various ways, which in turn opens the door to expand & grow in other areas of research. Not to say being a specialist in a specific area is a bad thing. On the contrary, we need experts who focus their energies into specific areas of research & understanding to uncover new knowledge & information from their said areas of expertise.

But for those who wish to research & grow in a broader spectrum of paranormal understanding, like the various paranormal societies who wish to cover more than one topic or category of paranormal research, having a library of reference is essential to having decent resources available apart from the internet. Not only collecting books over time, but understanding what purpose they provide & understanding the content there in is also as important as having good equipment or experienced investigators & researchers. Understanding what phenomena belongs in what categories will add organization to your research & structure to your resources, which in turn may help make one more articulate in the specific topic they are researching at the time.

Over the years, the society we run (Northern Wisconsin Paranormal Society) has collected quite a collection of books on various unexplained topics & subjects. They’re now located at the Northwood’s Paranormal Resource Centre, which is the headquarters & library for the NWPS, & available for the community upon request. As the years have passed, it has become necessary to divide all the information in the books into different categories of the unknown/unexplained.

All the books have been divided into 6 categories. We found that these categories encompass all the different kinds of phenomena which can be found in this world, at least the ones we currently know about. Even though these categories are separate & apart from one another, we find that they all go hand & hand w/each other. A few topics can be found in multiple categories, but for the most part, each topic belongs to at least one of these categories.

• Ghosts & Haunted Places; this includes residual & intelligent apparitions (ghosts & spirits), poltergeists/physic kinetic activity, haunted locations, shadow people, & even demonic activity.

• Cryptozoology; This includes legendary creatures, such as Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster, Dogman, The Jersey Devil, act… as cryptozoology is the study of undiscovered animal species.

• Aliens & UFOs; This includes UFO’s & USO’s, crop circles, animal mutualisation’s, alien abductions & missing time, etc…

• Metaphysics; or sometimes referred to as spirit science, this category is probably the most vast one. This includes topics such as ESP, psychics & clairvoyance, astral travel & o.b.e’s, divination, chakras, reiki, crystals, etc…

• Theology; which is the study of religions & spiritual beliefs. Understanding different religions & belief systems of a potential client or family who is experiencing paranormal activity is essential to the evaluation & how to go about resolving said activity. Demonology & spiritual warfare can also fall under this category as well as the first one mentioned.

• Conspiracy Facts & Theories; when one considers that the majority of conspiracy theories end w/some alien/government cover-up, it’s easy to see why this becomes relevant. Most men in conspiracies are also involved secretly & openly in occult activities & secret societies, which in turn are said to hoard the secrets which would set us free ultimately. Since this has to do w/the unknown, it needs to be acknowledged as such, & gets its own category.

Of course, some of these topics can be found in more than one group. When this happens, we refer to this as a paranormal crossroads cusp topic. A good example of a cusp topic is giants. Giants are mentioned in biblical & religious books from antiquity. This would allow for giants to fall into Theology. But because many of the giant skeletons are covered up by the government, giants may also find themselves in the Conspiracy Theory category as well.

We hope understanding these categories will help put the unexplained into perspective for those newer to paranormal research & investigating.
